Q: Honda CRV???
Id like to buy a 1999-2000 model honda crv, what can you tell me about them?? anything and everything will help…

A: I used to own a 2000 CR-V EX. Great vehicle until someone stole it at 191,000 miles on February 2, 2006- yeah I put a lot of miles on it. That is a true workhorse engine. Well built and super reliable with proper maintenance like most Hondas. Mine actually took my family (of four at the time)on countless road trips. In fact, it hit 100,000 miles crossing the New Mexico-Arizona stateline on our way back home to California from Texas. Never once this truck leave us stranded.

However, if you get one, make sure to get those valves adjusted every 30,000 miles. Honda has a TSB out on the 1999-2001 CR-Vs because of it. Lots of owners have needed costly valve jobs before 100,000 miles because they never had them performed. This was because the Owner’s Manual states that the valves should be adjusted every 105,000 miles instead of 30,000 miles like the European model. Valves were burning out as early as 50,000 miles in many cases. Why Honda posted that? Noone really knows.

The issue is something to consider. Most mechanics will tell you to do a valve adjustment if they hear the usual tapping- meaning the valves are loose. The valves on the B20 engined CR-Vs actually tighten instead of loosening. That means that there is no noise so mechanics that don’t know and will write it off as being okay. This actually applies to all 1997-2001 CR-Vs but the 1997-1998 CR-Vs have the lower compression B20B engine while the 1999-2001 have the higher compression, more powerful B20Z engine. Both are prone to the problem, but the B20Z has a greater chance of failure if it’s the valves aren’t serviced due to the higher compression. I had an issue with my car running funny and just told my mechanic to adjust them. He also told me that the valves didn’t need to be serviced. I said that I had a full tuneup and it still runs funny. He did it because I demanded it be done. To his surprise, my valves were tight- really tight. After the adjustment, all was well again. Luckily, I saved my engine and just had it done every 30,000 miles after that. If the engine is running super quiet without even a slight tap, it needs to be adjusted.

It sounds scary but it really isn’t. It’s just that Honda was in error by giving the wrong interval for the valves to us here in the US. All cars with solid valves need it done every 30,000 miles. Even the self adjusting hydraulic valves need adjustments- just not as often. This is something I thought you should be aware of. Still these are great vehicles.

FYI: There’s a removeable picnic table in the back of these. If you pull out the cargo floor in the back, it has folding legs on it that fold out into a table. Pretty neat, huh? Most people I’ve met who bought them used are unaware of it. Just something I thought that you might want to know whether you use it or not. Also, that plastic well below the load floor is there so that you can put wet items in there or you can actually use it as an ice chest too (-not much insulation though).

Q: honda crv…?
hi does anyone own a honda crv, or know anything about them?…i’m trying to buy a used one (like 2004), but i just heard today about bad transmissions, bad blind spots, and stuff like that…and i thought it’s supposed to be a really good car. is there anything i should know about it? any help is appreciated.

A: I have NEVER heard of CRV transmission problems. CRV’s are rated as one of the most reliable used cars to buy!

Some Generation 1 (older than 2002) have had engine issues because those engines need valve adjustments at regular internals and not all owners knew about this or did it.

Some Generation 2 models have had a pull to the right which can and should be fixed by the dealer.

Consumer Reports rates them as ‘much better than average’ in all components including transmissions. The only Hondas that I have heard with transmission issues were some early model Oddssey and a certain year or two of Accords.

Again, the CRV is one of the most reliable used SUVs out there.

I use mine ‘off-road’ all the time and its AWD system is great for snow, too. The current CRV has plenty enough ground clearance for mose ‘off road’ use. Just don’t fly over a huge rock or rut.

The previous poster who states that 30% have had transmission problems needs to back that up with hard evidence. Have not heard of anyone having transmission problems.

Q: Does a 2001 Honda CRV have a safety device that renders the suv undriveable after an accident?
My mom has a 2001 honda crv that got hit on the drivers side which caused damage to the hood, bumper and something in the wheel that makes a the suv unable to go beyond 5 mph. No broken windows, no damage to tire or wheel, no damgage that the eye can see where you would think the car is broken.

The hood is bent in slightly and the hinge is broken where the hood is attached to the body. No leakages of any kind and the rest of the suv looks brand new. What causes the honda to stop operating?
No check engine light comes on, there is a grinding noise on the drivers side. The engine revs up to 1 and a half and then it just comes down like it is going to stall.

A: If the check engine light is on it would indicate that an electrical sensor has been damaged. In some cases the car will run in what is called “limp-home” mode if the sensor that is damaged is a critical sensor such as the crankshaft position sensor that is used to determine when the fuel should be injected and when the spark plugs should fire.

if the check engine light is not on, your dealing with mechanical damage. From your description I would not be surprized to find that the exhaust pipe has been bent or crushed. when that happens the engine cant get the old air out to get the new air in so the engine power is dramatically reduced and the vehicle won’t go very fast or very far.

You didn’t mention if there were any unusual noises when driving. If you hear any clunks or scrapes then the problem could be interference with a drive axle. It doesn’t sound like thats the problem if the tire and wheel are okay.

I think you’re going to find out that the exhaust pipe is crushed unless the check engine light is on. if the check engine light is on, take it to a parts store, such as AutoZone or take it to a dealer and find out why the light is on. Then start the diagnosis as to what is wrong from that point

hope that helps

Q: My Honda CRV is a Japanese import which came without a spare wheel on the back?
I need to source either a spare wheel with 4 nuts or a space saver wheel for my Honda CRV 1997.

A: you can get a spare off of any first generation cr-v made, any origin or location. the first generation is from 1997-2001. i would go for the full size spare. you can come to www.crvownersclub.com for any more information im a moderator there and we have some pretty knowledgeable members

Q: Honda CRV Or Mitsubishi Outalnder Which is better long life?
Is Honda CRV 2.4 Better than Mitsubishi Outlander V6 .0 Engine… Im looking for a vehicle with good fuel effeciency and very good reliablilty

Will the 3.0L Engine be diffcult to maintain and costlier?

What do ull advice?

Im planning to buy a 4 Wheel drive among these two

Which must I Finally go for and Reason why ?

A: Go for the Honda it out performs the mit, hands down in all areas other than maybe speed.

Although neither of these cars are cheap to repair if there ever was a problem but the Honda is the cheapest. I was in the repair business for 35 years and could tell you some real horror stories on the mitsubishi`s Parts prices are out of site or they were when I finally retired and sold my business. My opinion it should be Honda and Toyota in a dead heat as far as performance and longevity. They both cost about the same to maintain and repair. In fact I would rather buy an American car and pay a little more in keeping it going than to pay the ridiculous prices the mit. Is probably going to cost you. And one other thing. if you do go for the mit. Do not buy one with double turbo`s.

Q: How do you change bulb in honda crv?
I am trying to replace a burned out brake light in a honda 2004 crv. Hinge side.

A: Look in the back of the car and you should find an access panel for the taillights. The base of the bulb will twist out of the taillight housing.

Q: How large is the cargo space on a 2008 Honda CRV?
I am planning on buying a 2008 Honda CRV but have not gone out to test drive them yet. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how large the trunk/cargo space is on them? I have a large dog and would also like to be able to fit a bike back there too. Do you think it is large enough to fit a bike in the back?

A: This should tell you everything you want to know about an 08 CRV.

Q: What kinda wheels would look good on my 2001 honda crv?
I have a 2001 honda crv se and its silver. what kinda wheels will look good on it?

A: Just whatever is already on it. Save your money for important stuff, not gaudy wheels that will attract thieves.

Q: I want to take my Honda CRV from Philippines to Spain. How do I find out if car will meet EC regulations?
I have a 2002 CRV bought in the Philippines – it was assembled here with many parts imported from Japan. I will be moving from Manila to Spain in the summer and am having difficulties establishing whether the car complies with EC standards on pollution, safety etc. Honda website not much use. Can anyone advise how to establish whether my car will be legal there?

A: bought a new on

Q: Is it possible to remove the rear drive shaft from a 2000 honda crv all wheel drive?
I own a 2000 honda crv with all wheel drive and the rear drive shaft recently broke. Is it possible to just remove the rear driveshaft and make do on front wheel drive?

A: No. Four wheel drive vehicles have a transfer gearbox after the main gearbox. The tranfer gearbox is to spread the engine power to both front and rear axles. It has a differential in it and the lack of the rear drive shaft would cause the differential to put all the power to the now non existent rear drive shaft. the car wont move. the only way to drive if need be in an emergecy is to engage t-case differential lock. However I am not sure if your car is 2×4 or 4×4 or 4×2. usually, for 4 wheel drive vehicles the front drive shaft is even smaller than the rear drive shaft and doing the above mentioned method would cause the front drive shaft to break as well. Just get the vehicle towed. The rear prop shaft could have broken because the rear axle input drive pinion got jammed and the car wont move with the a/m method either.

Get the car towed to a workshop.

Q: Why is it difficult to install a satelite radio in a honda crv?
Got a free radio when purchased honda crv last year. Son works at Honda dealership and says that it’s a bother to install. Too much taking off dashboard, installing antenna, etc. Why all the bother. I thought that it would be so easy, wonder why the financing company would give it away. My radio is sitting in a box collecting dust.

A: Honda has begun to move to a custom size format on their DIN pockets for stereos. It’s more of a marketing ploy so that they have to sell you a stereo for $300+ when you can get a much better one for about $150. For many cars, you’d have to buy new brackets and even a replacement dashboard kit to fit a normal radio in. Most dealers farm out the work to a stereo shop, so if you’d be better off going direct to them for the install to avoid Honda taking their cut.

Q: How Do I remove the dash speaker cover in my 08 Honda CRV?
I have an 08 Honda CRV LX. In the EX model there are dash speakers, the LX just has a removable plastic cover where the speakers would be if it were an EX model. I would like to remove this cover to place aftermarket speakers. Anyone know how to pop them out?

A: Check for any screws in the vents. If there aren’t any, take a small flat blade screw driver and pry up a corner. Put a paint stick or something flat under the screw driver so as not to indent the dash.Try to get under the cover as much as possible before prying up.

Q: How much do you pay for your car payment I want to get a Honda Crv?
which is cheaper the Honda CRV or the Honda accord.
I have good credit just trying to get a good ideal on the payments.

A: It would depend on a couple of different things. First, do you have a trade in? A trade in will take off of the final price. Secondly, do you have any money saved up to put down on the new vehicle? Thirdly, how far are you willing to go on the terms?

All of the above determine what your payments will be. The longer the term, the more interest you pay but your payment will be cheaper. If you have money to put down (say $2,000), that could cut a lot off of your payment, etc.

Q: What to do if ABS indicator, VSA system indicator and brake system indicator flash together on Honda CRV?
I have a 2005 Honda CRV. The three system indicators – ABS, VSA, and brake flash on for a second approximately 1 – 2 minutes after I start the car. Any idea what I need to do?

A: add brake fluid
